Home to Coast Salish peoples since time immemorial, Orcas Island 's natural topography has dramatic sea-to-mountain and fjord vistas, everywhere! Those who call Orcas home cherish this island. Earth Day Orcas celebrates a love of place, takes a look at the environmental challenges we face, and provides paths of hope, healing and empowerment to honor our home planet.

Our Earth Day Celebration along the waterfront of Eastsound started four years ago and has grown to include a parade, eco fair, poetry, community dance, concerts, and is now a FULL MONTH of enriching and thought-provoking activities. A local community team is now managing the programming for the month-long celebration and we have activities for all ages.

Apr 17-26, Online Film Fest: Celebrate Earth Day Month with inspiring and educational documentary films co-hosted with the Friday Harbor Film Festival. Enjoy selections from the Salish Sea Institute, Friends of the San Juans, and SeaDoc, featuring short and feature-length films that educate and inspire. This is a perfect opportunity to engage with Orcas Island events like the indigenous concert and peace walk, all from the comfort of your home. Join Deborah Giles, reknowned Marine Scientist from Sea Doc, for a convivial evening at The Barnacle and raise a glass to The Salish Sea. Giles will offer an informal science talk at 6 and event is open 5-7 pm.
EVENT IS NOW FULL
New Event hosted by Friends of the San Juan, same evening, 6pm at Orcas Public Library is the Salish Sea Story Dome, a 16' inflated projection dome with images from under the Salish Sea.

New this year at Earth Day Orcas is a morning Peace Dance and Walk on April the 25th, with song stops and a concluding community song circle. Dances of Universal Peace is at 10am. Walk begins at 11am at the Labyrinth. All ages, costumes, props, and sign boards welcome!
As a prayer for peace, the Walk is an affirmation of compassion for all humans, animals, plants, resources and environments around the world that are threatened under the dark cloud of war and oppression.
Together, we gather to pray for peace and compassion for all beings and for the Earth.
The 6-block loop walk concludes back at the eco fair and can be joined anywhere along the way. Community Song Circle at the Labyrinth at noon. All events launch and conclude at the Emmanuel Labyrinth.

Come learn and be inspired: Join fellow wildlife and nature protectors in a celebration of the Earth and Salish Sea.
Explore nature organization booths and activities from 10am-1:30pm with something for all ages. Song Circle. Garden Tips. Kids crafts, Beach walk. Lunch option.
Open before, during and following the Prayer Walk; seating and activities for all abilities.

A Sacred Covenant: special guest indigenous artists bring flute, drum, storytelling and chant to deepen our honoring of Mother Earth.
Sponsored by the NEA-funded Orcas Island Cultural Bridge.
Rena Priest (Lummi; WA Poet Laureate), Chenoa Egawa (Lummi/S'Klallam) and Paul Chiyokten Wagner (Saanich) will fill the Parish Hall with beautiful, thought provoking music and spoken word. 2-4pm.

Thanks to the generous support of Heritage Ranch, the National Endowment for the Arts, Orcas Island Cultural Bridge, The Paul Allen Foundation, Friday Harbor Film Fest, the San Juan Islands Makers Guild, and our community partners, we were able to celebrate Earth Day with various activities including the indigenous concert and peace walk on Orcas Island. The event also highlighted many Orcas Island events that bring our community together.
