Bringing it Home

Workshop Details

The Orcas Island community is invited to participate in a sea level rise workshop aimed at enhancing community resilience, featuring presentations by Tyler Davis of San Juan County Environmental Stewardship and Tina Whitman of Friends of the San Juans. They will share visual forecast tools for San Juan County and Orcas Island, discuss outcomes from previous community input, and explore various response scenarios. Following these presentations, attendees will engage in a hands-on design charette to consider options for the future of Crescent Beach and share their suggestions.

When the King Tides impact Crescent Beach, our community witnesses the potential consequences of sea level rise firsthand. Year-round, we face the reality of rising sea levels, with certain areas being more vulnerable than others. By learning to access valuable data and maps, we can better participate in the planning process. Armed with these tools, we can evaluate practical solutions and collaborate with County and local environmental organizations to prepare for significant property loss and potential disasters.

This community resilience workshop is hosted by Earth Day Orcas, taking place from 1-3:30 at the Fire Hall on April 15th. Attendees are encouraged to bring a cell phone, tablet, or laptop to try out the online forecasting tools.

Additional presenters include Peter Guillozet from the County Land Bank, who will help familiarize attendees with Crescent Beach Preserve boundaries and challenges, and Bruce Benton, who will provide updates about The Orcas Island EV Network, an award-winning climate change response program that installs charging stations and facilitates the EV Car Share. There is also recent encouraging news about plans for an electric shuttle bus public transportation service.
